Luminato Festival: Malpaso Dance Company @ The Elgin Theatre, -June 16th, 2018

By A.J.Lam
The 2015 sold-out Luminato festival favourite, the extraordinary Malpaso Dance Company of Cuba, returns with a mixed programme of works that show off the “superb artistry, technical skill and dynamic energy of these exciting dancers,” and the diversity of these Cuban modern dancers.
Osnel Delgado (Cuba): Dreaming of Lions (Suite, 2018)
Aszure Barton (Canada): Indomitable Waltz (2016)
Ohad Naharin (Israel): Tabula Rasa (1986

“Dreaming of Lions once again unites Artistic Director Osnel Delgado with Grammy Award-winning composer Arturo O’Farrill and his Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble, finding inspiration in the Hemingway classic The Old Man and the Sea. With balletic precision and muscular, grounded floorwork, Malpaso’s dancers channel the original story’s timeless themes of pride, loss, and perseverance, performing inventive phrases that ripple like waves across the formidable sea. Toronto gets the first chance to see the suite version of the work originally commissioned by Luminato.
Indomitable Waltz is choreographed by Canada’s multi-talented, award-winning Aszure Barton with music by Alexander Balanescu, Michael Nyman, and Nils Frahm. The cast of eight approach her subtly complex movements with rich nuance, resulting in a piece that is simple, stunning, and totally engrossing.
Batsheva Dance Company’s Artistic Director Ohad Naharin chose the music of Arvo Pärt for Tabula Rasa, a work that carries the hallmark signature of his approach. Naharin — hailed as one of the world’s preeminent contemporary dance choreographers — creates work with both emotional depth and extreme technical difficulty. Tabula Rasa is a striking blend of powerful expression and serenity.”

The Los Angeles Times exclaims that “The Cuba-based Malpaso Dance Company’s Los Angeles debut was a pinch-me moment, one of those times when you catch an artistic dawning.”
