The MC for the event was Executive Director John Choi who has  background experience in the mental health field. There were 3 speakers at the Breakfast Symposium.

Saroya Tinker, professional athlete and philanthropist who suffers from eating disorders, shared her experience while being a professional athlete. She also shared that she uses painting as therapy. She is part of the ‘Healthy Eating’ organization

Wendy Presko President and Founder of National Initiative for Eating Disorders (NIED) whose daughter when she was 14 was diagnosed with a severe eating disorder along with ADHD, OCD and anxiety. As a parent, Wendy explained that you feel like you’re the only family going through this – but at Sheena’s Place you are welcomed and helped.   Kyle Ganson – University of Toronto researcher and assistant professor who leads support groups for those with eating disorders.

What is Sheena’s Place?  A community support centre for people dealing with eating disorders. A range of group supports are available for eating and body shape issues. Advocacy and information for families. Sheena’s Place augments existing services and provides linkages to other services. Public awareness to reduce stigma. No referrals needed. Residential care or crisis intervention.

It was an interesting and informative session learning from the 3 speakers. The takeaway is we need to reflect and act on why we judge others. We need to remove judgment of ourselves and others. The event was a chance to learn more about eating disorders, how to get help and to speak to others who suffer from eating disorders.

Sheena’s Place offers webinars for workplaces and schools and provides a vast array of support.  For more information of support of eating disorders here is Sheena’s Place website  https://sheenasplace.org/programs-registration Sheena’s Place doesn’t receive government funding, and relies on the generous support of donations.
