Mariposa Folk Festival 2024 was an unforgettable celebration of music, community, and culture. Held on the scenic grounds of Tudhope Park on the shores of Lake Couchiching in Orillia Ontario, the festival spanned three sun-soaked days from July 5-7, drawing thousands of enthusiastic attendees.

The diverse lineup showcased an impressive array of talent, and the festival grounds were alive with the sounds of folk, blues, and roots music, creating an atmosphere of joy and connection. But the weekend’s highlights were undoubtedly the headlining performances and the special induction of Bruce Cockburn into the Mariposa Hall of Fame.

Headliners such as Band of Horses, Old Crow Medicine Show, Noah Cyrus, William Prince, Dwayne Gretsky, Bahamas, Amigo The Devil, Jesse Cook, and more delivered spectacular performances to thousands from the main stage now known as The Lightfoot stage.
Bruce Cockburn’s induction on Sunday afternoon was a poignant and heartfelt ceremony. A Canadian music icon, Cockburn’s contributions to folk and roots music over the past five decades have been immeasurable. His performance, followed by the induction, was a masterclass in songwriting and musicianship. Songs like “Wondering Where the Lions Are” and “If I Had a Rocket Launcher” had the audience singing along. The standing ovation that followed his set was a testament to the profound impact he has had on the genre and on the hearts of his fans.

The festival’s charm lay not only in its stellar lineup but also in its diverse offerings. Workshops, art installations, and storytelling sessions provided a rich cultural experience beyond the music. Families and friends gathered on the grassy knolls, enjoying picnics and the summer sun, while children participated in creative activities designed just for them. Food vendors offered a delicious array of local and international cuisine, satisfying every palate.

One of the highlights was the festival’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Attendees were encouraged to reduce waste, with ample recycling stations and a focus on eco-friendly practices.

This year’s Mariposa truly encapsulated the spirit of folk music – a blend of tradition, innovation, and a strong sense of community. As the final chords echoed over the lake, it was clear that Mariposa 2024 had left a lasting impression on all who attended.
