It was an eventful sunny Sunday by the lakefront as Michael Cuzzupe, a firefighter and he’ll be volunteering with Camp BUCKO this August as an enthusiastic Camp Counsellor for the kids.Michael mentioned that”there are incredible people who participated and work with the organization.
His best friend of 15 years Johnny Cornacchia, is also a firefighter. They’ve both been active volunteers in the communities across various organizations over the years. This was year one of the yearly event for Camp BUCKO and the festivities/events for the day did not disappoint,each volleyball team had 6 players with some improvising to get enough athletes on the beach,kudos to the teams who had back up plans to get this exciting tournament going.There were some spirited and competitive action with decent rallies during the match ups. The champion team was “ ‘Da Tutti Noi’”-bellissimo ,great effort from this team who hoisted up the trophy,plus we look forward to each team returning next year with defending champs “Da Tutti Noi.” The translation for the team name is for everyone who showed up to this event-“salute from all of us goes out to you.”A very successful event which exceeded all expectations with a total of $8,000+ raised.This event will be bigger and can only get better in 2025. A big thank you to the organizers for the invitation.
A little bit about Camp BUCKO
Camp BUCKO (Burn Camp for Kids in Ontario) is a camp open to burn survivors between the ages of 7-17. Our residential camp has grown to over 70 children attending our week long camp in August. There is no fee to attend Camp BUCKO. We are a registered charity providing our program through the generous donations from the fire fighting community, service groups, businesses, the public and other private/public organizations. A Board of volunteers from across Ontario plan for camp throughout the year. With the donations we receive we are able to fully fund each child’s stay at camp, their transportation and provide them with souvenirs from camp, otherwise known as “swag”.
Camp BUCKO is a fun, safe and caring camp program free to kids ages 7 to 17 with burn injuries. Our residential setting encourages campers to participate in a variety of social, recreational and therapeutic activities that promote self-esteem, the development of leadership skills and fosters personal growth. At Camp BUCKO, kids have a place where they can be themselves without feeling different or alone.
