Boomstock @Sobeys Stadium-Saturday, August 24,2024

By Wayne Baggs

Boomstock on Saturday, August 24, was a celebration of classic rock and reggae, delivering a powerful lineup that resonated with fans of all ages.

The festival brought together legendary bands, each delivering a unique performance, making for an eclectic yet cohesive musical experience. The evening kicked off with The Box, who set the tone with their polished new wave sound, engaging the crowd with hits like “Closer Together.” Their energy was contagious, priming the audience for the night ahead. Next up was Sweet, whose glam rock flair brought a burst of nostalgia. Their “Ballroom Blitz” performance had the crowd singing along for all who were ready, like Tim.

Chilliwack kept the momentum going with their catchy melodies and powerful vocals. Kicking off with Lonesome Mary, blending rock and pop with their signature West Coast vibe. UB40 brought a different vibe, infusing the festival with their smooth reggae rhythms. Their set was a refreshing contrast to the heavier sounds of the other bands, with hits like “Red Red Wine” and “Cherry Oh Baby” transporting the audience to a sunnier, more relaxed place. They stayed away from their early social comment songs. Dang.

BTO finished the evening with their signature brand of hard-hitting rock, delivering anthems like “Takin’ Care of Business” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” with the same raw power that made them icons in the first place. Randy pleasingly included many of his hits from his days with the Guess Who. The Sobey’s Bowl is a great place for a concert by the way. More would be nice.
