Day #1 Of TIFF- Movie Reviews, Red Carpet & Events- Thurs., Sept. 5th, 2024

By The BKONTHESCENE crew

What a fantastic way to start with the documentary screenings of Canada’s iconic group, The Tragically Hip, taking place in front of the Royal Alex. Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal  Film screening – and an honour to have Canadian musicians including Bare Naked Ladies band members, Toronto vocalist and songwriter SATE and Oji-Cree singer-songwriter Aysanabee – both past Juno Nominated, and Max Kermen of The Arkells.

The plan was to see the first 2 hours of the over 4 hours of the 4 sessions put together as one screening. But after two hours and then the 20 minute break there was no way I’d leave. Documentary was mesmerizing and fascinating. So interesting learning about the Hip’s beginnings, their interactions, travels to give massive concerts and their adoration of their fans.

It’s said  ‘Canada gave the world RUSH but we kept The Hip for ourselves’… however the Hip are loved worldwide.  Not a dry eye in the house at film end. Gord Downie being our Canadian hero. A Canadian such as Downie who respects our Indigenous people is our hero and one we respect immensely.

After the documentary screening .. yes, over 4 hours.. (It’s a 4 part series on Prime as of September 20th) the 4 band members hit the stage for a Q & A with a surprise guest, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke. He is featured in the Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal documentary.  It was an amazing experience. What a wonderful group of guys… how much they all miss their best friend and bandmate Gord Downie.  As we do…   See it. Love it.

Following the screening and the Q & A, the audience, along with the general public, were invited to John Street just south of King Street to sing 3 Tragically Hip songs. Led by  Nobu Adilman and Daveed Goldman the audience, including Hip band members (in the audience) sang Bobcaygeon, Grace, Too and Ahead by a Century.

Bonjour Tristesse-Director Durga Chew-Bose  WORLD PREMIERE at Royal Alex Theatre

Red Carpet Bonjour Tristesse at Royal Alexandra Theatre – Caste and crew including Canadian singer Charlotte Cardin standing  to the side. She is girlfriend of actor Aliocha Schneider in Bonjour Tristesse. Fans were happy to wait to see these actors on the Red Carpet. Lots of excitement!

Bonjour Tristesse by Director Durga Chew-Bose is an adaptation of Françoise Sagan’s coming-of-age novel. This is a passion-soaked debut feature by Montreal-based writer-director Durga Chew-Bose heralding a singular artist. Adorned with costuming by Miyako Bellizzi and a score by Lesley Barber, Bonjour Tristesse captures the complexity of relationships among women.

Scenery is beautiful. Character developments and plot are very interesting. The interaction of the personalities on their holiday is fascinating. As days turn into weeks and the sun’s power fades, Cécile discovers fabulous people around her — who are just human after all — as she does about herself. Stylish, detailed and emotional, Bonjour Tristesse is a timeless tale of growing up.

Bonjour Tristesse truly captures the complexity of relationships among women. A film of reflection and beauty.
