DANI presents An Evening with Kodi Lee-Thurs.,Dec.5th,2024 @ Meridian Arts Centre

By Sally Warburton

Thursday, December 5th was a very special evening at the Toronto Meridian Arts Centre in North York Toronto. This was a fundraiser for DANI (Developing and Nurturing Independence) the organization which provides life-changing opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. All funds from ticket sales went to DANI.

Setting the mood by hosting the evening was Mary Berg, the dynamic Canadian tv host, author and cook, who won the third season of MasterChef Canada. Kodi Lee was the very special guest for the evening. The Winner of America’s Got Talent!  And what a wonderful evening it was! In his sparkling red jacket, Kodi Lee, who is autistic and blind, was escorted on the stage to his piano. We could feel his excitement and love of performing as he arrived on stage to the full concert venue!  His first performance in Toronto! The minute Kodi Lee started playing piano and singing we all knew how he won America’s Got Talent. Beautiful piano playing and soulful singing as he performed heartfelt ballads and upbeat songs. With his four piece band of 3 guitarists and drummer who’ve been with him for years, the Meridian Hall for the Arts was a very happening place!

What is Kodi’s story? Kodi’s talent and photographic memory for music have taken him across the world, performing with well-known artists and inspiring diverse audiences. And this audience in Toronto supporting DANI was definitely more than inspired!  Kodi first got the world’s attention during his viral audition on America’s Got Talent, earning the Golden Buzzer with over 432 million views! Since winning AGT Season 14, Kodi has continued to headline shows in Las Vegas and is now working on his debut album!

During the break there were delicious muffins for sale from DANI Catering, with all the funds going to DANI. After the break was a time to celebrate important supporters of DANI.  Denise and Monty accepted the plaque award as did Robyn and Saul. Kathy Laszlo Co-Founder and Executive Director of DANI was joined by Rudy Barell, Chief Developmental Officer of DANI for the presentations which received rounds of grateful applause.  About DANI: ‘We believe in the power of inclusion and the potential of every individual. Through our comprehensive goal actualization plans, skills training and community support, we empower individuals with developmental disabilities to thrive and lead fulfilling lives. What started as a parent advocacy group, has now grown into a multi-faceted organization which includes exceptional programs, two campuses, five social enterprise businesses and a residence.’

After the plaque presentations, it was back to the star of the evening – Kodi Lee and his band! More of Kodi’s warm presence, beautiful songs and wonderful piano playing. We felt such an honour to be in Kodi’s presence and to have the chance to hear his music.

Held at the Toronto Meridian Arts Centre in North York, a beautiful building with wonderful acoustics for music concerts. Conveniently located on the Yonge TTC subway line.  A wonderful event and fundraiser for DANI.
