Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband) – Canadian film in Inuktitut language. A performance of Indigenous Inuik singing by two singers before the screening set the tone beautifully. Throughout the film, bleak harsh Arctic scenes are portrayed in a natural way. Tranquil relationships. The need to survive. A beautiful film to help understand the Inuk culture of living in small groups.
A young woman is promised a husband from a young age. And the young man is promised she will be his wife. There are insinuations of abuse as we see this in relationships and the fear is powerfully felt.
What the film emphasizes most importantly is the love of family and love of the promised husband and wife. A film about relationships and ‘a promise is a promise’. All this leads to a love story in acclaimed Inuk filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk’s latest film of ancient Inuit stories.
This North American Premiere was held at the Royal Alexandra Theatre.
