Santana-Tues., June 10th, 2014@Casino Rama

It wasn’t a quiet day or night at the sold-out show at Casino Rama on Tuesday for Carlos Santana and his 10 piece band. This  amazing band comprised of  percussionist duo and  conga drummer: Paoli Mejias and Pepe Jimenez, two male singers: Tony Lindsay and Andy Vargas. Plus two horn players:Trumpeter Bill Ortiz and trombonist Jeff Pressman. Santana was happy to let his guitarist Tommy Anthony sing lead vocals and sing a bit of The Police’s Roxanne. Santana played for over 2 hours to a loud capacity crowd who stood up for most of the concert and then were allowed to eventually rush the front stage to get closer to the guitarist. The 66 year young Santana was also accompanied by his drummer wife Cindy Blackman.  Familiar with her work with “Spectrum Road” a super-group comprised of legendary musicians: Bassist  Jack Bruce of Cream fame, Vernon Reid of Living Colour fame and keyboard wizard  John Medeski.  It was no surprise when Cindy performed an amazing drum solo.  She can play with the best of them and Carlos said” I’ve lost my place” after her amazing drum solo. After 40 years and countless amounts of recordings, Santana doesn’t look like he’s slowing down.  He just released “Spanish for heart”  this is the title of the “A” list rock guitarist new Latin language album.  Also the official anthem for the World Cup “Dar Um Jeito” was not played. It was a mash up with Avicci, Alexandre Pires and Wyclef(Maria, Maria) We’ll wait for the start of the opening of the FIFA World Cup 2014 in July to hear the premiere of the song.  Santana joked with the crowd during breaks in the music and was heard saying ““What’s the curfew man? Who’s going to come here and bust us?” Santana said with about 35 minutes to go in the show. “What’s this? The witness protection program?” it appeared his passion in his music was still there and he wanted to play all night for the capacity crowd who kept dancing through out the set.  Santana often mentioned his peers such as Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Jim Morrison and  Jimi Hendrix throughout the night during  his “Zen/Philosophical  like rants” which had the crowd cheering for more during the  two hours of music,  story telling and visuals on the backdrop.  All the old and new standards were played: Maria, Maria,  Black Magic Woman, Evil Ways(which was dedicated to Dick Chaney and George Bush),  Oye Como Va, and Smooth the classic instrumentals Samba Pa Ti, Jingo and Soul Sacrifice with a Woodstock chant from the video.. Carlos still loves the good ole “hippy days’ and after 40+years he must have to edit alot of footage , music and stories to tell.  We can only imagine what he has in store but  he’s still energized and ready to work with everyone new and old.  Don’t be surprised if he works with the likes of Lady Gaga or Andrea Bocelli
