JUDAS PRIEST @ Casino Rama with Steel Panther (October 7, 2014)

A stellar double bill of metal legends Judas Priest with opener Steel Panther invaded Casino Rama in Orillia.

Well, if you were expecting a comedic “Spinal Tap” type of show for opener Steel Panther Tuesday night –you would be sorely wrong. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the band was pretty accomplished in playing their instruments.

True, it was the ole “Hair Band” circa 1984 memories, but the combination of  fun “Yuk, Yuk’s” + “Hair Band” comedy skits while emulating iconic 80’s hair rockers like David Lee Roth, Brett Michaels, Ratt, Skid Row and Bon Jovi all wrapped up in one band. Working the crowd with their skits and trying to lure the lovelies back stage was one of the more funnier moments of the show.

Not a bad show considering I wasn’t too keen seeing this band. As the lead singer Ralph Saenz announced to the crowd”who in the audience has seen us before?who has never seen us? who will never want to see us again?” I think this writer is a fan now! Alberto V.O.-5 in the large non-aerosol size please!

The headliners Judas Priest hit the stage with an impressive amount of huge lighting, smoke/fog and a projector screen behind the drum kit.

Was it loud? it was real loud!

Playing “Dragonaut” from their latest album Reedemer of Souls, then into metal anthems “Metal Gods” and Devil’s Child. Rob Halford’s one of Heavy Metal’s greatest voices showed after 40+ years of belting out tunes, he hasn’t lost a step.

With the release of their new cd Redeemer of Souls and their world tour, it doesn’t look like this British band will be slowing down anytime soon. Halford looked like he was in great shape again.

Two years ago in Los Angeles for the Revolver Golden Gods Awards, Halford was sporting a walking cane while performing at the Nokia Centre honoring Metallica. On Tuesday night he was strolling back and forth on the “Rama” stage and really working the crowd.

The highlight of the night was a version of “Love Bites” with movie clips of old Dracula movies showing on the back drop. The crowd was in a frenzy with “Hell Bent With Leather” and “Breaking The Law” Halford a big fan of motorcycles brought his chopper out to the delight of the hard core “Priest” fans.

The set ended with encores off their two most popular songs from two of their arguably most successful albums, “You Got Another Thing Coming” from “Screaming with Vengeance” and the album that broke Priest in North America “British Steel” with the popular “Living After Midnight.”

Veteran Halford had the crowd up on their feet after the encore , with fans chanting “Defender Of The Faith” and “Priest” in unison and after he walked off stage with the rest of his band mates the fans were still chanting.

It was great to see that heavy metal has a home at Casino Rama and it’s still viable in the eyes of young, old, girls and boys!

I think the fans wanted another few hours of Judas Priest but hey this writer was pretty pleased with their set.

Staying around after the set, a roadie handed the set list down to us. It was a little crumpled up but any “swag” is a good “swag.”
