JOHN FOGERTY — 1969: LIVE ACROSS CANADA at Casino Rama (Nov 12, 2014)

by Bill Kwan

When you arrive at the Casino Rama concert venue, you are quickly transformed back into “1969”, a vibrant but turbulent period in American history.

The stage backdrop was filled with images of 1969 — hippies dancing, old 45 vinyl records and pictures of John Fogerty’s legendary old band Creedence Clearwater Revival (not to be confused with “Creedence Clearwater Revisited” sans without front man Fogerty).

If you really wanted to “Revisit” the turbulent hippie flower power era, this was the show to attend.

Fogerty’s bandmates included drumming great Kenny Aronoff, Bob Malone on keyboards, and his son Shane Fogerty on rhythm guitar,  along with two new members – James Lomenzo on bass and Devon Pangle on guitar.

Fogerty’s collection of guitars on display was a guitar collectors dream, as he told a story how he started using the Les Paul electric guitars, “I’d heard these British guys using Les Paul’s for lead, and it had this beautiful, fat tone. When I played it for the first time that day and started playing open E and G chords, it was like the Red Sea had parted. I knew that was it…”

On display — Rickenbacker 325, Gibson Les Paul, Fender Telecaster, Fender Stratocaster, Fender Telecaster Deluxe to name a few legendary guitars.

My favourite, a baseball-themed wooden bat guitar played during his classic baseball-centric “Centerfield” classic. With the baseball-themed backdrop and custom made guitar, Fogerty’s love of America’s pass-time was evident.

One of my favourite stories of Fogerty is his travel to Mississippi in 1990 for inspiration and visiting the gravesite of the great blues legend Robert Johnson.

According to Fogerty, while in Mississippi he had the epiphany that Robert Johnson was the true spiritual owner of his own songs, no matter what ‘businessman’ owned the rights to them, and thus Fogerty rejuvenated, decided to start creating a new album and performing his CCR material regularly in concert again. Thank goodness for his epiphany and this tour of ‘1969’ — he performed all his classic material and more!

In the not-to-distant future, Fogerty will be collaborating along with a number of guest artists on the upcoming “Wrote a Song for Everyone”. While a track listing and due date have yet to appear, the LP will reportedly focus on “classics and deep tracks” from both Fogerty’s CCR and solo periods, and it will feature guests from the  Foo Fighters (who will guest on “Fortunate Son”), My Morning Jacket, Bob Seger, Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Alan Jackson and Dawes, among other notables.

It appears this 69-year old musician has not slowed down one bit and the “1969: Live Across Canada” tour will continue into 2015.

So, what’s the point buying a ticket to that other “C.C. Revisited” act, when the real author of classic CCR songs will be visiting your town —  hail John Fogerty for bringing back “1969” for 2014.
