This is a cute “Feel Good Story”in the spirit of My Big Fat Greek Wedding and just in time for Valentine’s Day. Ryan Scott and Jeannette Sousa star as mismatched lovebirds and when Jack gets rescued by Maria, a Portuguese beauty, he has no idea that his life and luck are both about to change. During this accidental “first date”, Jack and Maria project images of themselves — images that are humorously contradicted through a series of flash-forwards to their future life together.
The film was directed by John L’Ecuyer and stars real-life couple Ryan K. Scott (Undressed) and Jeannette Sousa (CSI: NY). Alongside Joaquim de Almeida (Our Brand is Crisis, Clear and Present Danger) and Vik Sahay (American Reunion), Grammy award-winning artist Nelly Furtado and TV personality George Stroumboulopoulos appear in the film.
Inspired by Scott and Sousa’s real-life experiences as a couple, A Date With Miss Fortune follows Jack (Scott), a struggling sitcom writer and Maria (Sousa), a superstitious beauty, who fall in love after an accidental meeting at a diner. After a romantic start, the couple must cope with their competing worldviews, Maria’s disapproving Portuguese-Canadian family, and a warning from her favourite psychic, who claims Jack is not the man for her.
A Date With Miss Fortune had a successful theatrical release in Portugal and received a positive first showing at the annual American Film Market in November 2015. It will be released in Canada through Northern Banner Releasing on February 5 and on VOD and home video on May 9. In the US, Vision Films will release the film, with select theatrical screenings handled by First Pond Entertainment.
