On Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016, B’nai Brith Canada celebrated its 2016 Human Rights Gala by honouring Grammy-Award winning Canadian music legend and humanitarian David Foster with the Award of Merit, the highest distinction their organization can bestow. A dedicated human rights activist and Officer of the Order of Canada, it was a well deserved honour for Foster to receive this prestigious award.
The event, which featured a live auction, catered dinner and entertainment, marks the rebirth of B’nai Brith Canada, and also the partnership with a wonderful organization – the David Foster Foundation. For the past 29 years, the David Foster Foundation has improved the quality of life of over one thousand families with children in need of life-saving organ transplants by providing financial support and raising public awareness about the importance of becoming a registered organ donor.
Mr. Foster has also worked with his friend and fellow philanthropist Haim Saban – who presented him with the award and raised more than $150 million in support of the Friends of Israel Defence Forces over the past eight years.
Following his acceptance of the Award of Merit, Mr. Foster performed “David Foster Unplugged,” during which he was joined on stage by special musical guests Ruben Studdard and Kelly Levesque. American actor and comedian Sinbad also performed. B’nai Brith leadership from throughout Canada attended the event, including B’nai Brith’s Chair of the Board Jay Harris, and Gala co-chairs Avi Behar and Warren Kimel.
As a leading human rights organization, B’nai Brith Canada was proud to award a person of Mr. Foster’s calibre this prestigious honour. Mr. Foster is truly an iconic musician and staunch advocate of Canadian values and ideals.
We would like to thank Lori Cooper for the invitation to this event.
