As summer comes to a close, it’s once again time for geeks to unite in their love of comics, video games, anime, sci-fi and all things that are a testament to the power of imagination. Labor Day weekend from Aug 30 to Sep 2, geeks and fans gathered in record numbers, where both the North and South buildings of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre were filled to capacity for FanExpo, Canada’s largest and most prestigious convention for genre and pop culture media.

The celebrity guest lineup was not only extraordinary, this year FanExpo had the rare privilege of hosting a reunion of the cast of Back to the Future with Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson and Tom Wilson all present to meet and greet fans of one of the 80’s most iconic movies.

The star tour continued with other major players including William Shatner, Rob Schneider, Jason Momoa, Evangeline Lily, and Lucy Lawless, among many others. The convention also featured a rare appearance of comic’s legend John Byrne, a forty year veteran in Marvel and DC comics who has both written and illustrated for many of their most prominent titles including; X-Men, Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight, The Hulk as well as She-Hulk, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Ironman, and Spider-Man.

Along with the multitude of comic book artists and writers, FanExpo is always a venue offering something for everyone, from anime voice actors to video game creators, and even wrestling stars such as Triple H. There’s no shortage of someone to meet no matter what you’re a fan of. Not to mention the endless assortment of memorabilia for the avid collector; posters, statues, rare signed art, movie prop replicas, fantasy apparel… from decorating the wall to display shelf, everything to satisfy the geek heart’s desires.

And as you’d expect, fan attendance for this kind of gathering brings with it a vibrant fashion showcase and this year was no exception. The parade of costumes was impressive as it was colorful and diverse, fueled by passion, creativity, and the inspiration to bring these worlds of fiction to life. There were also the cosplay stars to meet including Leeanna Vamp, Joannie Brosas, Brit Bliss, Bec of Hearts and an all-time fan favorite, among the most followed on social media, Jessica Nigri.

If FanExpo is proof of anything, it’s that the dedication of fans is as boundless as the imagination.
