Terry Bozzio @ The Royal Theatre – Fri., Sept. 14th, 2018
It was a “Mash Up” of Rock, jazz, classical, & ethnic percussion styles from around the world. Terry Bozzio is “a storyteller,” able to thrill his audience with a culture filled experience of innovative instruments and “world beats.”
The performance is on the largest tuned drum & percussion set in the world. Bozzio’s 2 hour show is more than a “drum solo concert.” This is MUSIC on drums. There is space, classical forms & structures, ambient electronic loops, and atmospheric percussion effects, as well as some exciting & fiery drumming that brings audiences to their feet!
He has spent the last 30 years performing Solo Drum Music for Sold Out Audiences all Around the World, from India to Japan, from Europe to North America.
The show in Toronto was filled to the rafters with fans of Frank Zappa, Missing Persons and his solo career. There were some improv moments, experimental shifts during the concert and at times it felt like an art instillation. Bozzio had his audience in a trance and to keep them focused , no photography was allowed during the performance. It would have been intriguing to include some guest vocalist or Bozzio singing some of his more familiar songs – “I’m So Cute” -and “Trying To Grow Me A Chin-Frank Zappa .”Maybe next time , as he has done some “one off shows “ with alumni of the Frank Zappa era.
We would like to thank MRG Concert Support Tram for the invitation to cover this concert.
