It’s 1977, a radio station in Brampton with reception so weak it was hardly receivable in the GTA, is broadcasting Talking Heads – Talking Heads 77, Television – Marquee Moon, Iggy Pop – The Idiot, The Clash – The Clash, The Stranglers – Rattus Norvegicus and playing the tunes on regular rotation! These are now considered some of the greatest albums of all time. One of these, Marquee Moon by Television, is on many top 100 albums lists. It wasn’t that well known by the masses and very few in Toronto knew at the time of the album.

This album didn’t come flying out of the gates, hell, so-called punk wasn’t that big yet. So here we are 42 years later. Are you going to get that same excitement from hearing a seminal album you love, and performed live? One way to find out, so I went to the concert, and glad I did. They were a great live band. They are even better musicians now, playing with more dynamics and looseness then before. Tom Verlaine approached the songs differently now, as most singers do. The songs from the first two albums sounded fresh with some of that pop sound removed for a loose modern feel. Also, Jimmy Rip’s finesse on the Tele helps. Thankfully Television liked to stretch out some jams. Some of the best music of the night was the jamming. Great start to CMW. Hard to beat a great live act. Get out and see some live music during Canadian Music Week.
Opening the show with her performance, was KANDLE-who is a Canadian singer-songwriter, based in Montreal and the daughter of 54-40 frontman Neil Osborne.
