Anthony Gomes@Hugh’s Room-Wed.,May 22nd,2019
By Wayne Baggs
Right from the first note, Anthony Gomes delivered straight ahead, unapologetic hard-rocking blues. His latest release, Peace, Love and Loud Guitars is exactly what Gomes and band: Jeremy Howard on drums and Sean Holland on bass, fed us.
With loud guitar being at the forefront. Don’t get me wrong. Gomes has the gritty, raw soul singing chops to go with the fat tone of his incredible guitar playing.
Made evident on his fantastic cover of Let Me Love You, a song Rod Stewart performed on Jeff Becks first Album.
Gomes is a massive fan of the blues genre, paying homage to it in many ways. Songs such as Stealing From The Devil about Robert Johnson and Come On Down a foot-stomping blues Tribute to B.B. King. Both written by Gomes made clear he respects them immensely. Not finished there he adds a “Gomes” version of Voodoo Child.
Live hard rocking blues your thing! These are the guys to see, kicking it out and loving it. Great players doing great songs in a place like the Hughs Room Live is hard to beat. What a nack the Hughs room has for bringing in great talent. Another excellent example is Anthony Gomes.
We would like to thank Jane Harbury for the invitation to this concert at Hugh’s Room.
