The TD Toronto Jazz Festival kick off its 50th Anniversary Party in the Bloor–Yorkville area with the legendary Downchild Blues Band getting the party started with a free performance at the TD Mainstage on Bloor Street between Avenue Road and St Thomas Street.
Featuring The Blues Brothers co-founder Dan Aykroyd, Late Night with David Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer, blues-rock great David Wilcox, Louisiana bluesman Kenny Neal, and Downchid alumni Gene Taylor.
The Downchild Blues Band performance was spectacular with all the hits being performed-“Flip, Flop and Fly”, “I Got Everything I Need” and “Shotgun Blues” The iconic band’s set officially kicked off the opening party on the streets of Toronto.
The after party was held at the Masonic Temple/The Concert Hall, where Danny Marks and his All-Star band opened up the evening with a “Hot Blues Set” . Another highlight was the “grand entry” by 8 Brass Band.
With over 20 years and one of the most popular and visible funk-style brass bands in community parades and funerals, this band has been “Super Hot”and they kept the audience dancing at the Concert Hall.
Finally, the appearance of “Elwood Blues” aka Dan Aykroyd and his band, featuring Paul Shaffer and Danny Marks.
Just in time for some more blues and close enough to Canada Day, this All-Star “Canuck Band” had everyone from the rafters to the volunteers “dancing up a storm” on a Saturday night.
