The 40th Anniversary of The Dora Mavor Moore Awards 2019@The Sony Centre For The Performing Arts- Tuesday, June 25, 2019

By Sally Warburton
It was an exciting time at the Sony Centre…the 40th Dora Mavor Moore Awards took place. The Dora Mavor Moore Awards celebrate the achievements of excellence in theatre, dance and opera productions in Toronto – to all those who’ve contributed to Toronto’s arts culture.

It was also a time to thank and recognize members and volunteers of the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts for hosting the awards event. A time to acknowledge the talent and professionalism on the stages in Toronto, to recognize their creativity and showcase their talent.

The Sony Centre is a spacious comfortable venue with a beautiful stage was the perfect setting. Throughout the awards ceremony people from the General Theatre, Independent theatre, musical theatre, theatre for Young Audiences, Dance, Opera were celebrated.

Outstanding achievements were presented in Direction, Design, Choreography, Lighting Design, Musical Direction, Stage Managing, Costume Design, Choreography and, of course, Performance, to name a few of the Awards.

Presenters such as actress Louise Pitre were proud to be part of the ceremony and the Toronto acting community.
Applause and cheers were loud and rowdy – supportive and fun! A really awesome atmosphere. When groups of theatre members were on stage together, you could see the collaboration and the fun they’d had working together.

After the 3 hour ceremony which flew by in no time… there was a post party held on the west terrace. A rhythm and blues and funk band played. An excellent band called Trainwreck. Guests danced and enjoyed drinks from the bar, snacks in the front foyer, ice cream bars and lining up for the gourmet hot dogs.

The weather was perfect. A beautiful evening. The band, the people, the fashion, the venue all coming together to make an evening of celebrating the Toronto theatre scene a wonderful one. There couldn’t have been a better way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Dora Mavor Moore Awards. It was brilliant.
