By Sally Warburton
Two of the events leading up to the 2019 Honey Jam were the Honey Jam Launch on July 25th and Meet the Producers on July 29
To start here’s the history. Honey Jam 2019 is the 24th Year of Honey Jam. Founder Ebonnie Rowe proudly compared the 24th year of Honey Jam with the 24th year of the Raptors! And what a great winning year to compare! PhemPhat Entertainment was formed in 1995. The Honey Jam Talent Showcase was created to give exposure and encourage to hundreds of women artists over the years. Singers, performers, poets – others have become DJ’s, producers, sound music engineers, music managers, label owners and promoters.

The Honey Jam participants do all kinds of music – hip hop, rock, pop, country, jazz, gospel, reggae, blues etc. Past Honey Jam well known artists include Nelly Furtado, Jully Black, SATE and Melanie Durrant.
Honey Jam supports Canadian female artists. Women from all over Canada.

Successful audition participants receive vocal and performance coaching. Workshops offered to participants include learning about songwriting, publishing, management, funding, media, entertainment law. An important part of Honey Jam’s philosophy is giving back to the community by supporting women and girls’ community programs in Toronto. Honey Jam’s wonderful supportive sponsors realize the importance of Canadian women’s music industry. Each year in August there is the ‘showcase of talent’ as a concert performance.

July 25 was the Honey Jam Launch. Located on the 54th Floor of the 60 Wellington with a beautiful view of the city of downtown Toronto. There was lots of talent and lots of excitement on the 54th Floor!
This was a great chance for Honey Jam participants to interact – many meeting each other for the first time. It was a chance to learn about each other’s experiences in the music industry. Guest speaker Elle Varner was American singer-songwriter whose new album Ellevation has just been released on eOne. This enthusiastic speaker spoke so passionately about her music industry experiences. The selected Honey Jam participants enjoyed Elle Varner’s informative talk and Q & A. Elle’s understanding of the music industry and what the Honey Jam participants are experiencing was shared. A fantastic evening for all involved in Honey Jam.

On July 29 at the Artscape on Adelaide Street West, Toronto was the ‘Meet the Producers’ evening for Honey Jam participants. The event featuring America’s Nova Wav, production duo from Los Angeles. The Nova Wav duo is Denisia Andrews (Blu June) and Brittany Cony (Chi). The Grammy nominated songwriting team has worked with Beyonce, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, DJ Khalid and Nicki Minaj. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn about the music industry and to hear positive news on women in the industry. The evening included a ‘Mentor Café’ with local producers. Participants had one-on-one timed conferences with experienced producers. Lots of good conversations and information exchanged. A well-organized music industry event to add to the Honey Jam participants’ experiences. Honey Jam participants left in awe of the Nova Wav songwriters’ talk and then practical advice from producers.
Feeling all the excitement and motivation at the event makes the upcoming Honey Jam concert an event not to be missed! See you there Thursday, August 22 at the Mod Club, Toronto for the Honey Jam 2019!
