VOLCANO THEATRE ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF SCOTT JOPLIN’S TREEMONISHA
TREEMONISHA: A REIMAGINING OF ONE OF THE
WORLD’S FIRST BLACK OPERAS
What:
Internationally acclaimed Toronto-based theatre company Volcano announces the official launch of a ground-breaking project: Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha.
This is a Black-women-led reimagining of one of the world’s first all-Black operas, Treemonisha. It tells the story of the evolution of a young Black woman into an effective leader, able to reunite a fractured community. It was written in 1911 by ragtime giant Scott Joplin.
This VIP event will bring artists and composers together to kick-off a crowdfunding campaign designed to raise the $30,000 balance to stage the upcoming spring production.
Guests will enjoy an exclusive musical performance by Treemonisha heroine, Neema Bickersteth.
Also, an exciting Instagram campaign will go ‘live’ and encourage audiences to nominate their own #RealLifeTreemonisha – highlighting the extraordinary achievements of Black women across Canada and the USA.
