BECOMING ICONIC: JONATHAN BAKER was created in tandem with Baker’s preparation for and production of his own directorial debut, INCONCEIVABLE, starring Nicolas Cage, Gina Gershon and Faye Dunaway. The documentary is directed by Neal Thibedeau.
Jonathan Baker hosted a COVID-safe, “no shoes, no-carpet” premiere of his educational documentary BECOMING ICONIC at his home screening room on top of Mulholland Drive, a sumptuous 25-seat venue named after his house’s former owner, Warren Beatty. That’s it: show up, take off your shoes, watch the movie, and then join Jonathan for an al fresco champagne and caviar (among other foods) lunch at his showplace home overlooking the Valley on a beautiful spring day. Beats standing in front of a step and repeat and Subway, right?
BECOMING ICONIC is a master class in directing by Neal Thibedeau, who documented Baker on his first directing job and interwove that footage with interviews with some of the industry’s most iconic directors, including Jodie Foster, Taylor Hackford, Adrian Lyne, Nicolas Cage, and John Badham.
Baker’s taken a winding path through Hollywood, starting out as a cub reporter for US Weekly and Rolling Stone, and subsequently launched a highly successful national brand called Skin Spa. He went on to become a bad-boy reality star in shows like Girls Next Door, Kendra and Amazing Race. He also directed and produced strange, VERY offbeat TV projects including Dirty Tennis with Bruce Jenner, Dick Van Patten, and Nicollette Sheridan (which he’s going to re-release in summer) and Dorf on Golfwith Tim Conway. A little more recently, Baker directed a thriller for Lionsgate called INCONCEIVABLE, starring Nicolas Cage, Gina Gershon, Faye Dunaway, and Nic Whelan; and EP’d three action films: SURVIVE THE NIGHT starring Bruce Willis; FORCE OF NATURE starring Mel Gibson, Kate Bosworth, and Emile Hirsch; and next week’s AMERICAN TRAITOR, starring Al Pacino and Meadow Williams.
