Wiser with Dilip Jeste, MDPlease join The Friends of the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA and the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital Board of Advisors for an Open Mindprogram with the world-renowned neuropsychiatrist, Dilip Jeste, MD and his daughter,  Shafali Jeste, MD, esteemed pediatric neurologist.

Dr. Dilip Jeste is the author of the groundbreaking new book, Wiser: The Scientific Roots of Wisdom, Compassion and What Makes Us Good. In Wiser,  Dr. Jeste, a pioneer in the exploration of neurobiology and the psychology of wisdom, explores what it means to be “wise”, if it’s possible to grow – and even accelerate its unfolding, and how to nurture wisdom within yourself, at any stage in life. If you seek to be a wiser person―with your family, at work, and in your community―you will not want to miss this program!

For over two decades, Dr. Dilip Jeste, Professor of Psychiatry and Neurosciences and Director of the Center for Healthy Aging at the University of California San Diego, has led the search for the biological and cognitive roots of wisdom. As a renowned geriatric neuropsychiatrist, Dr. Jeste studies positive attributes of the aging brain. He holds several distinguished teaching and research titles at the University of California, San Diego, where he helped develop one of the largest geriatric psychiatry divisions in the world. While serving as President of the American Psychiatric Association, he spearheaded the process of finalization, approval, and publication of the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V), often called the ”Bible of Psychiatry.” He is the director of the newly launched UCSD Center for Healthy Aging and has published 12 books including Positive Psychiatry. He loves doing empirical clinical and biological research on fuzzy concepts such as wisdom, successful aging, and decision-making capacity.

Dr. Shafali Jeste is a Professor in Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.  She is the recipient of the 2019 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Her research is focused on developing more precise methods for early prediction and diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism, using biomarkers, and other genetic information, with the ultimate goal of improving the timing and targets of treatment for these conditions. Dr. Jeste has just been named Chief of Neurology at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and will begin her tenure there in July.    Tuesday, June 15
