Allen Stone@Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto-Thurs., December 2,2021
By Wayne Baggs
For me, the hardest gig to pull off for a performer, solo on a stage. It’s you and the audience. No fall backs, no breaks for drum solos. Allen had the Phoenix crowd right from the start, never letting them go. His fans sang along to every song. Can this guy sing, wow.
I would have to say Stevie Wonder influenced him. A soulful, R & B pop sound. The enthusiasm of playing live spilled over into the crowd. Mutual expression of joy being the feeling of the night. With the release of APART, Stones fifth album, he once again proves himself devoted to making uncompromisingly soulful music that transcends all pop conventions.
Allen’s approach to immersing himself in songwriting, that involves the unflinching examination of “some very dark and negative moments in my life” touches his listeners. One man, one guitar, can’t get more organic than that. My guess, we will hear from Allen Stone for many years to come.
We would like to thank Kyle MacCallum, MRG LIVE for the invitation to this event.
