“For the Grand Jury Prize, we recognize a film which is totally original, layered, philosophical and non-linear — challenging our understanding of history. For celebrating the power of documentary filmmaking and the responsibility of the filmmaker to examine the truth.” – 2022 Sundance U.S. Documentary Competition Jury
“Using Christine Choy’s never-before-seen gold mine of thirty-three year-old footage as a foundation—and the irrepressible Christine herself as a guide—Ben and Violet showcase cinema’s unique ability to fold time with this riveting, real-life tale of political commitment and consequence. Given the state of the world, it feels especially relevant right now.” – Executive Producer Steven SoderberghWATCH THE FIRST LOOK CLIP HERE
“ESSENTIAL.”– Andrew Bundy, The Playlist
“Christine Choy is a character so incandescent that she’s every bit as powerful in front of the camera as she is behind it.”– David Ehrlich, IndieWire
“The Exiles isn’t simply one of the best and most vital documentaries released in the past decade. It’s also a layered, inventive piece of filmmaking.”– Danny Munso, Backstory
In 1989, documentarian, activist, and iconoclast Christine Choy filmed the leaders of the Tiananmen Square democracy movement following the June 4th massacre. Midway through production, the project was abandoned and the footage was all but forgotten. Directors Violet Columbus and Ben Klein follow Choy as she returns to the never before seen archive, and the stories of three key figures during the protests, who remain political exiles to this day. Directed by Ben Klein and Violet ColumbusProduced by Maria Chiu, Ben Klein, and Violet ColumbusExecutive produced by Steven Soderbergh, Chris Columbus, Eleanor Columbus
