Nagata Shachu Presents KAZÉ, and MA | The Space Between Us
NAGATA SHACHU Japanese Taiko and Music Group Presents Two Concerts in May 2022 KAZÉ (wind), and MA | The Space Between Us ![]() In KAZÉ (wind), originally scheduled for June 2020, Nagata Shachu will collaborate with master shinobue (bamboo flute) player Toki Tatara. KAZÉ is a concert that will seamlessly combine the worlds of shinobue, taiko, and the three-stringed shamisen while exploring new possibilities for these traditional instruments. In the Japanese arts, “MA” can refer to the negative space to what is painted on the page, or the silence between musical notes. In Farsi, MA means ‘us’ or ‘union’. MA | The Space Between Us takes these two translations as inspiration for a new collaborative work between Nagata Shachu and Sashar Zarif. MA | The Space Between Us features an exhilarating collaboration with Sashar Zarif, whose award-winning, multi-disciplinary dance projects are steeped in the artistry and history of traditional, ritualistic, and contemporary dance and music of Central Asian, Middle Eastern, and North Africa.Nagata Shachu is a seven-person ensemble including founder Kiyoshi Nagata, and Aki Takahashi, Naoya Kobayashi, Andrew Siu, Kevin Xi-Zhao He, Briana Lee, and Marie Gavin. Based in Toronto, Nagata Shachu has enthralled audiences internationally with its mesmerizing and heart-pounding performances of the Japanese drum (taiko) since its formation in 1998. While rooted in the folk drumming traditions of Japan, the ensemble’s principal aim is to rejuvenate this ancient art form by producing innovative and exciting music that seeks to create a new voice for the taiko.
