The Lighting of the Beacon at Casa Loma –
The Celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by Sally W.

Wednesday, June 2nd was a beautiful evening in Toronto at Casa Loma. It was the first evening of Casa Loma’s outdoor dining experience. Delicious food, impeccably served in the gorgeous garden setting of Casa Loma. Even the full kitchen with chefs and serving staff is outside in a tented area. Guests were eating full meals such as salmon or steaks or hors d’oeuvre, desserts and drinks. Sipping a glass of wine while enjoying the beautiful venue is a wonderful way to spend a summer evening in Toronto. June 2nd was a very special evening as it was the Lighting of the Beacon to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth is celebrating her 70th year as the Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth. This celebration was in partnership with the Rotary Club of Toronto, The Honorable Company of Freemen of the City of London of North America, and St. John Ambulance.

It is so fitting to celebrate the Queen’s 70th year as Monarch in a castle! Casa Loma was one of more than 1,500 where beacons were lit in the UK and in capital cities of Commonwealth countries to honour Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth’s service. Nick Di Donato, president and CEO, Liberty Group who was part of the beacon lighting ceremony knew that this would be “a milestone event in Casa Loma’s long history in Toronto.” And it certainly was.
The very first dinner reservations of the season started at 5pm.The Beacon Lighting Ceremony began at 8:30 PM with an official visit from Her Honour, the Honourable Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Elizabeth Dowdeswell. There were official speaking remarks by dignitaries, live entertainment including a bugler from The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada and a piper from St John Ambulance. The highlight of the evening was the formal Beacon lighting where diners in the garden patio outdoor restaurant looked up to the first balcony at 9:15 PM to see the flames of the lit beacon and reflect on the 70 years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign. A beautiful and memorable moment.

In addition to dining, Casa Loma offers its summer program of:
Symphony in the Gardens and the Princess Diana: Accredited Access experience continues. Beautiful music, delicious food in a gorgeous setting in Toronto’s very popular venue. Always a brilliant experience at Casa Loma. Reservations are available online at www.casaloma.ca
