The 14th Annual Canadian Immigrant Awards@The Sheraton Centre-Aug.11th,2022

In its 14th year, the Canadian Immigrant Awards took place at the Sheraton Centre Hotel in downtown Toronto on August 11th. The awards celebrate the success of immigrants from all across Canada. It was an evening to celebrate the important contributions 25 Canadian Immigrants have achieved. 

To receive their awards and to celebrate with colleagues, family and friends was a wonderful group of talented people. Tasin Ajibola from Nigeria who now lives in New Brunswick was named one of the 30 under 30 innovators in Atlantic Canada. Tosin received the Youth Award Winner for 2022. Patrick Alcedo from the Philippines living in Toronto is an award-winning professor in the Department of Dance, York University and is also a documentary filmmaker. Diana alli D’Souza from India now in Toronto is the President of Access Empowerment Council and board member on several boards.  Anil Arora also from India living in Ottawa is Chief Statistician of Canada and international speaker. Karla Briones from Mexico also in Ottawa is an award-winning entrepreneur professor at Algonquin College, founder of KB Consulting. Karla is the Entrepreneur Award Winner.  Rita Chahal from India living in Winnipeg is the Executive Director of Mood Disorders MB.  She is the recipient of Manitoba 150 Women Trailblazers Awards. Tracy Folorunsho-Barry from Nigeria now in Edmonton, Alberta is the award-winning founder and CEO of GROW Women Leaders and an author.  Raquel Fox from Bahamas now in Toronto is in addition to being a Chef, is also a speaker, author, TV host and founder of Island Gurl Foods.

Dr. Sivakumar Bulasingam from Sri Lanka living in Toronto is an award-winning physical medicine and rehabilitation physician with the University Health Network.  Mohamed Lachemi, PhD from Nigeria now in Toronto is President and Vice-Chancellor of Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson) . Leen Li from China lives in Toronto now and she is the Chief Executive Officer at WealthSimple Foundation.  Janaka Ruwanpura, PhD. from Sri Lanka living in Calgary is Professor, Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Research (International) at the University of Calgary.  Ruairi Spillane from Ireland living in Vancouver is an award-winning entrepreneur and founder of Moving2Canada.  Finally the last recipient present at the awards evening was Rui Want, PhD. from China who is now the Dean of the Faculty of Science at York University, Toronto and professor.  Other award winners not in attendance sent video messages. Their names and achievements can be read on the Canadian Immigrant Awards website.

The Sheraton Centre Hotel presentation room was filled with talent, brains and entrepreneur skills. Many strong feelings of motivation and pride. 

The awards were presented by the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship – The Honourable Sean Fraser, MP.

He opened the evening by emphasizing the continued importance of immigrants to Canada. Thanking them all for their wonderful contributions. A video message from Justin Trudeau Prime Minister was shown at the beginning. Following the presentations and speeches was a reception in the adjoining room with time to congratulate the winners and take lots of photos.  A wonderful evening to celebrate Canadian Immigrants.
