(Telluride/Toronto) In a very rare honor, both the Telluride and Toronto Int’l Film Festivals will present special premiere screenings of Daniel Zarvos and Lianne Mutti’s stunning documentary feature Miúcha, The Voice of Bossa Nova, an innovative mix of archival images, animation, rare recorded interviews and the intoxicating sounds of Bossa Nova.

Using the powerful and fascinating story of the beloved Brazilian vocalist Miúcha, the documentary film stands as a vital tribute to an incomparable musical artist and unsung feminist icon, all the while setting out to generate a revival of global proportions for the vibrant Bossa Nova musical movement. The film is produced by Mostafiz ShahMohammed, Marta Sánchez and Daniel Zarvos.

Miúcha, The Voice of Bossa Nova will have its World premiere at the Telluride Film Festival running September 2 – 5th and its Canadian premiere as part of the TIFF Docs section at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, runningSeptember 8 – 18th, with director Daniel Zarvos in attendance for both festivals and available to speak to the media.

A tour de force, Miúcha, The Voice of Bossa Nova tells the story of the renowned Brazilian singer through her personal letters, audio diaries, home movies, and expressive watercolor drawings animated for the film. The male musicians in Miúcha’s life overshadowed her. She was known as the sister of Chico Buarque, the pupil of Vinicius de Moraes, the second wife of João Gilberto, the musical partner of Antônio Carlos Jobim, and the vocal accompaniment to Stan Getz’s saxophone. But Miúcha’s vibrant spirit couldn’t be held back, even as she struggled to find her own voice in a man’s world. She earned unprecedented success, becoming a symbol of female resilience and a musical legend forever.
