Sue Foley @ El Mocambo-Thursday, Sept.8th,2022

By Wayne Baggs

This was Sue Foley’s first time at the renovated El Mocambo and what an honour that she chose it to record a live album and DVD. El Mocambo and Sam Grosso presented it on September 8th at this site of many iconic live recordings. There’s an unmistakable magic that comes with – not only being in the room with live music – but live music captured live-off-the-floor and forever archived in album form. The show, recorded live and filmed by some of the best engineers and producers in Toronto, such as the master Doug McClement. For the occasion, Doug brought along his vintage Sony ECM-22P condenser mic that he used to record Stevie Ray Vaughan 39 years ago. Good for some SRV mojo!!

Sue played a blistering 2 hour set composed of material from her latest great album, Pinky’s Blues, resting in the top 10 albums for 27 weeks on theRoots Music Report’s Canadian Chart. A great homage to the Texas blues sound. This, along with a great selection from her previous 11 albums, made for a fabulous set. Sue is a five-time Juno Awards nominee and 2001 winner for Best Blues Album, and a few weeks ago, named as the winner of the Traditional Blues Album and Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year awards at the 2022 Blues Music Awards in the US. Last month, she won the Guitarist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards. What a great way to celebrate! With the place packed and the vibe of the crowd amazing. This is one live recording I’m looking forward to.

We would like to thank Eric Alper for the invitation to this event .
