THE DiRECTORS PARTY
TIFF for the fashionistas? Canadian International Fashion Film Festival (CANIFFF) showcased the very best submissions from the international fashion films community for three days from November 28th to 30th in Toronto. An intimate and exclusive Directors’ Party kicked off the event at the majestic Eglinton Grand on the first day followed by film screenings in the mornings of November 29th and 30th at the IDFK Gallery. Lively and open panel discussions on this new and continually evolving art form in both afternoons at the Gallery and the CANIFFF Red Carpet after parties in the evenings back at the Eglinton Grand to honor and celebrate with the award winners.

THE DIRECTORS PARTY
CANIFFF presented their first ever “Lifetime Achievement Award” to Henk and Yanka Van Der Kolk. Henk is one of the Co-Founders of TIFF, which started as the Festival of Festivals in 1976 that has now become one of the most influential film festivals in the world. Yanka is Canada’s original supermodel and a top international model for twenty years. She is the creator of the program, Power of Self Image, and believes that beauty is a process and that it is attainable by all of us. Henk and Yanka have been married for 60 years this past July. Their contribution to the Canadian and global landscape in film and fashion was celebrated on the second night of the film festival.

THE DIRECTORS PARTY
Over 21 awards categories including the Best Fashion Film to the Best Student Fashion Film were presented at the festival this year over the last two evenings of the event. The Best Canadian Fashion Film was awarded to Kit Pilosof for The Open. Dancing on a tennis court, the solo dancer is shown on both sides of the court. On one side, she is in white and dances gracefully. On the other side of the court, she is in black and is playfully devilish. Contrasting colors, movements, and music make The Open a suspenseful delight to watch.

Haunted by Love by Director Imanol Ruiz de Lara Osácar won several awards including The Best Director Award. It is a fun, whimsical and witty fashion film for Vogue. The main character of this short musical travels through many areas in an extravagant hotel dancing with her lovers while dodging flying arrows coming from every angle. She is running away from love until at the end she finds the source of love.

CANIFFF offers a fresh and colorful look at the innovative world of fashion and curates a unique experience for fashion and film lovers. As fashion is increasingly playing a leading role in its very own genre, we look forward to the freshest and most creative local and international talent next year.

Fashion Films defined:
Fashion film is a genre of film making that seemingly defies definition and transitions fluidly between theater, photography, music, advertising, and narrative film: an artistically
rich and important tool of fashion communication. Fashion films have become the new frontier of brand communication – somewhere in between the classic storytelling and the exaltation of typical brand commercials and designers’ collection pieces.Fashion brands combine emotion, image, and perception. They need to continuously develop, implement,
and further innovate their digital strategy in order to retain and further develop their brand.
WHY FASHION FILMS?
With the help of fashion films, fashion brands can create an immersive and innovative environment online. It is the first time that an audiovisual format shows the incredible fashion universe to the world, and lets the brands express a whole world of human feelings. Humanizing brands makes it easier to engage current and future customers. An excellent story is the key to successfully seduce viewers and to engage them. Fashion film is the natural evolution that fashion brands need to
do in the digital era, because of the digital behavior of younger consumers. The internet is an interactive medium and fashion film is the proper way to facilitate the use of interaction without betraying its essence.
