Sean Jones Presents “Holiday Soul” at Koerner Hall Toronto, Sun. Dec. 10th, 2022
by Sally W.
What a great way of spending a cold afternoon in Toronto… inside Koerner Hall listening to none other than Toronto’s Sean Jones! The Juno Award-winning R&B singer and songwriter had his first festive concert, “Holiday Soul” at the beautiful Koerner Hall’s Telus Centre for Performance and Learning.
The charismatic Sean Jones performed soul-inspired holiday classics accompanied by the Toronto Concert Orchestra. In both the first and second sets, Sean invited award-winning singers Divine Brown and Jackie Richardson to sing with him and then a few songs on their own. Jackie Richardson also sang “Me and Mr. Jones” to Sean…in response to his performance of “Me and Mrs. Jones”. Very fun.
Both were fabulous. In the second set, Jackie Richardson gave an emotional tribute to her friend Salome Bey and referenced her legacy on the bus and being immortalized on Canadian stamps. Salome Bey was an American-born, Canadian singer-songwriter, composer and actor known as “Canada’s First Lady of the Blues” and an honorary member of the Order of Canada. Richardson referred to Salome as Mother Earth and wanted to honour her by singing her song Christmas Blue. A beautiful rendition.
Divine Brown said she was happy to sing O Holy Night because she got to say ‘Divine’ many times while singing!
Koerner Hall was full of R&B and soul music fans. The audience loved it. Even Pinball Clemons was spotted in the audience!
The concert came to an end all too quickly…All the singing, the music, the saxophone solo by Miles Raine and the presence of Sean Jones on stage were brilliant. Sean ended by emotionally thanking everyone so much for coming and said “I’ll leave you with this song.”
And then he said what we were hoping he’d say “You’ll have to come back next year” And we sure will. A fantastic concert. A new annual tradition! The Sean Jones “Holiday Soul” Concert.
