We had the privilege of attending the opening night of Cirque Du Soleil-LUZIA, marking the company’s 38th original production since 1984. Running under the Big Top at 2150 Lake Shore Blvd West in Toronto from June 18th to August 30th, the show offers a breathtaking escape into an imaginary Mexico. Upon arrival, guests were greeted by a vibrant welcoming entourage of stilt walkers, dancers, Day of the Dead characters, masked lucha libre wrestlers, and a lively mariachi band.

First premiered in 2016, this mesmerizing installment seamlessly intertwines surreal storytelling, world-class acrobatics, and contortionists. The narrative propels the audience into a waking dream, following the encounters between a parachuted traveler and an array of dreamlike characters. Notably, LUZIA is the first touring Cirque du Soleil production to artistically incorporate water, featuring a spectacular rain curtain and a submerged stage basin. Performers effortlessly glide through the downpour in acts like the Cyr Wheel, while hoop-diving artists leap through targets just 75 centimeters wide while operating on twin moving treadmills.

Throughout the 125-minute performance (which includes a 25-minute intermission), the stage shifts dynamically through diverse Mexican landscapes, from serene beaches and arid deserts to bustling street markets and nostalgic dance halls. The production honors Mexico’s rich artistic heritage and spiritual depth through stunning visual anchors like monarch butterflies, marigolds, and traditional Otomi embroidery.

The evening culminated in a vibrant finale where the entire cast reunited, earning a passionate standing ovation from an audience thoroughly immersed in the magical “Mexicali” experience.
