Squeeze, Adam Ant and Haircut 100 — Not a Bad Monday Night
You don’t usually think of Monday night as the night to go out and see three British bands from the ’80s, but that’s exactly what happened at the RBC Amphitheatre on August 31. And honestly, it was a pretty damn good way to spend a Monday.
Haircut 100 opened things up with a quick set that had a lot of people singing along. “Fantastic Day” and “Love Plus One” were probably the big ones, and Nick Heyward seemed to be having a good time. They weren’t around for long, but they got things moving.
Then Adam Ant came out and, well, Adam Ant is still Adam Ant. Plenty of attitude, plenty of swagger and the songs everyone came to hear. “Antmusic,” “Goody Two Shoes,” “Kings of the Wild Frontier” and “Stand and Deliver” had the crowd going. You could see people who had probably been listening to these songs for 40 years suddenly looking like they were 20 again.
Then Squeeze hit the stage.
Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook don’t need much more than their guitars, a good band and those songs. “Cool for Cats,” “Up the Junction,” “Take Me I’m Yours” and “Tempted” all got big reactions, and there was a lot of singing coming from the crowd.
The best part was that Squeeze didn’t feel like a band just cashing in on the past. They sounded good, they looked like they were enjoying themselves and the songs still work.
Three bands, a bunch of great songs and a Toronto crowd that knew pretty much every word.
Yeah, I’d say Monday night was pretty well spent.
